Surfers Against Sewage #EndSewagePollution
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are fighting a hardy campaign to combat the dumping of sewage in our UK waterways.
Why you ask? Well, in 2019 there were over 200,000 discharges of untreated sewage into UK rivers and almost 2,000 discharges into UK coastal waters during the May-September bathing season alone, according to SAS. This has led to the UK being ranked 25th out of 30 EU countries for coastal water quality and only 16% of the waterways meet ecological status.
Surfers against Sewage are trying to amend the problem through urging MP's to pass the Sewage (Inland Waters) Bill. The Bill will place a duty on water companies to ensure untreated sewage is no longer discharged into England’s inland waters. It also aims to increase transparency, through mandating firms to publicly report on the number, condition, and quality of the sewage being discharged. It also proposes that the Government investigate further steps and, encourages private stakeholders such as the Environment Agency to improve water quality.
Therefore, it is clear to us at ZERO Case that this cannot go on! We have joined the campaign and think you should give it a look too!
